During the seminar, participants will also have the opportunity to take dan and instructor examinations. The 1st–6th dan exams will be held on 10 October 2026, while the 3rd–2nd kyu instructor exams will take place on 11 October 2026.
Dan Examination Requirements
dan exam: Holder of 1st kyu, 16 years or older.
dan exam: At least 1 year after obtaining 1st dan.
dan exam: At least 1 year after obtaining 2nd Dan, 19 years or older.
dan exam: At least 1 year after obtaining 3rd Dan, 25 years or older.
dan exam: At least 2 years after obtaining 4th Dan, 30 years or older.
dan exam: At least 3 years after obtaining 5th Dan, 35 years or older.
Dan Examination Requirements
3. kyu exam:
Wado-kai technical 3rd Dan or higher.
At least 25 years old.
2. kyu exam:
Wado-kai technical 4th Dan or higher.
At least 30 years old.
At least one year must have passed since obtaining the 3rd Kyu Instructor qualification or
Holder of Wado-kai technical 6th Dan or higher
Exam materials
Kihon:
Jun-zuki, gyaku-zuki, jun-zuki tsukkomi, gyaku-zuki tsukkomi (all including kicks), as well as tobikomi-zuki and tobikomi-nagashi — 6 repetitions each.
Note: 6 repetitions of jun-zuki, then after turning, 6 repetitions of jun-zuki with a kick, and so on.
Tobikomi-zuki and tobikomi-nagashi do not include kicks.
Whether 5 or 6 repetitions are required will be announced on the day.
Kata:
1st Dan: One kata designated from the Pinan series
2nd Dan: Kushanku
3rd–5th Dan: One designated kata (Seishan or Chinto) on the day, plus one freely chosen kata from the remaining nine Wado-kai kata excluding the Pinan series → total of 2 kata
Kihon Kumite:
1st & 2nd Dan: 1 exercise
3rd–5th Dan: 2 exercises designated on the day from the set of 10
Kihon:
Tobikomi-zuki, tobikomi-nagashi-zuki
Kata:
Designated kata: one of Seishan or Chinto
Free kata: one selected from the remaining nine Wado-kai kata excluding the Pinan series
→ total of 2 kata
Kihon Kumite:
2 exercises selected by the pair of examinees from the set of 10
Kihon:
Same as the 1st–5th Dan examination Kata:
Designated: Seishan and Chinto (performed consecutively in this order)
Free kata: one selected from the remaining eight kata excluding the Pinan series.
→ total of 3 kata
Kihon Kumite:
Odd-numbered techniques (1st, 3rd, 5th, 7th, 9th)
Free Kumite:
Required: mouthguard, fist protectors.
Optional: step guard, shin guard.
However, if instructed by the examiners, these may not be used.
Eligibility:
Wado-kai technical 4th Dan or higher.
At least 30 years old.
At least one year must have passed since obtaining the 3rd Kyu Instructor qualification or,
Holder of Wado-kai technical 6th Dan or higher.
Kihon:
Same as the 1st–5th Dan examination.
Kata:
Same as the 3rd Kyu Instructor examination, except:
The examinee performs all three kata (Seishan, Chinto, free kata) consecutively alone.
Kihon Kumite:
Odd-numbered (1, 3, 5, 7, 9) or even-numbered (2, 4, 6, 8, 10) techniques, designated on the day.
Free Kumite:
Required: mouthguard, fist protectors.
Optional: step guard, shin guard.
However, if instructed by the examiners, these may not be used.
